Famous as the birthplace of Francis Asbury who spread Methodism in America, Great Barr was largely rural until the 20th century. Back then, it was ruled by four ruling families and the parish was made of many small hamlets.
However, like much of the West Midlands, it was influenced by the industrial revolution that affected nearby towns like Birmingham. By the Second World War, it was a busy residential area with excellent connections to West Bromwich, Walsall and Birmingham. The name ‘Burr’ means ‘hill’ and refers to Barr Beacon.
Parts of Birmingham were once known as Perry Barr, while other areas known as Great Barr are in the Metropolitan Boroughs of Walsall and Sandwell. Places of interest in this area include Red House Park which is open to the public and provides amenities for the local community, and Great Barr Hall- a grade II listed building.
Notable residents of Great Barr have included TV presenter Cat Deeley, artist Gillian Wearing, and John Bainbridge the writer.
