Located in the borough of Sandwell, Wednesbury is located near the source of the River Tame. Like many parts of the West Midlands, it was most known as an industrial area in the past. In particular, for a century it was dominated by the huge Patent Shaft steel works, whose factory wasn’t demolished until the 1980s.
In the 17th century Wednesbury was known for its pottery, which was known as ‘Wedgbury ware’. It was so popular, it was being sold as far away as Worcester!
During the First World War, it was hit by one of the first waves of German Zeppelins. The borough of Wednesbury ceased to exist in the 1960s, with a majority of it absorbed into West Bromwich.
Today, it’s a well connected town for commuters.
